Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2), set by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda, aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. Despite significant progress in reducing global hunger over the past decades, millions of people still suffer from chronic undernourishment, especially in developing regions affected by poverty, conflict, and climate change. SDG 2 focuses on ensuring that everyone, everywhere, has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year round, while also addressing the quality of diets to combat malnutrition in all its forms, including stunting, wasting, and obesity. It emphasizes the importance of sustainable farming practices that protect ecosystems, improve soil health, conserve water, and enhance resilience to climate shocks. Supporting smallholder farmers—who form the backbone of food production in many countries—is a key priority, as is improving rural infrastructure, agricultural research, and market access. Achieving SDG 2 also requires tackling food waste and ensuring equitable food distribution, as hunger often results not from scarcity but from inequality in access. By linking food security to environmental sustainability, SDG 2 recognizes that nourishing the planet and its people go hand in hand, making it a crucial goal for building a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable future for all.
