The solar system, a gravitationally bound system, centers around our Sun, a star, with eight planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, and comets orbiting it. The planets, in order of distance from the Sun, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) are rocky, while the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) are gas giants. The asteroid belt lies between Mars and Jupiter, and the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud are beyond Neptune. Our solar system is located within the Milky Way galaxy.
