The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD was a devastating event that resulted in the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Satabiae, and other settlements. On August 24th of that year, the once-considered-extinct volcano awoke and erupted, covering the surrounding cities and their inhabitants with pumice, ash, and debris ( Cameron 2006 ).
