World Ocean Day is celebrated annually on 8 June. It was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and aims to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and the need to protect them. In 2025, World Oceans Day will be celebrated in Nice, France, ahead of the UN Ocean Conference. The day serves as a platform to catalyze collective action for a healthy ocean and stable climate.  (SDGs) and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the  of its resources. World Oceans Day is observed by all UN member states. Since the creation of WOD there has been a new theme each year that shapes the annual event and aims to raise awareness to the dangers our oceans face.
