- Mary Kom started boxing in 2000 after being inspired by fellow Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh, who won gold at the 1998 Asian Games. She trained under coach M. Narjit Singh at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Imphal. Her first major success came in 2001, when she won a gold medal at the Women’s National Boxing Championship.
